So many continents, so little time

Unlike our other adventures around the world, our recent trip to Morocco meant more. That trip marked the end of an era filled with adventure, leading to Sean backcountry snowboarding all seven continents, and me skiing five. The end of that journey marks the beginning of a completely new one for us. (One that we’re excited to tell you more about in the coming months!) To honor that chapter of our lives, I’d like to take a trip down memory lane today—bear with me… 4 years is a long time. I began my journey with Sean in 2010. He, having…

Honeymoon in Romania - Frequency Snowboard Journal Article, Issue 11.1

November 25, 2023

This article—written by yours truly—was recently published in Frequency Snowboard Journal Volume 11, Issue 1. Enjoy! — The Romanian forecasts were all the same: dry. It was mid-December 2012 and my husband Sean was engaged in a serious stare-down with Eastern Europe’s weather predictions. Mere weeks separated us from a two-week expedition to the Balkans. Eastern Europe was having some of the worst snow since the 1800s, but our flights were booked and our travel plans were arranged. So we went. An expedition to Eastern Europe was our first choice for a honeymoon. Sure, we could have gone the all-inclusive-resort-on-a-tropical-beach route, but…

5-Star Travel on a Budget, Busby Style

One of the most common questions we get is, “How do you afford all your travel?” For starters, we work with a lot of rad sponsors/partners that believe in what we do. Secondly, we SAVE. Like it’s our job… because, well… it is our job. We forego things at home in Montana so that we can add more to our travel fund. Those new jeans you see on sale? To us, those jeans represent a night at an authentic Moroccan kasbah this February. When we drive our veggie oil-fueled VW Golf into Glacier National Park, we take the money we would have…

Christmas in Romania, revisited

I know it’s been a while since our trip to Eastern Europe, but I would be remiss if I didn’t document our Christmas experience in Romania. Over the holiday, we stayed at a lovely guesthouse by the name of La Despani. Located in Brasov—the heart of Transylvania, La Despani is an oasis in the middle of the bustling city. The unassuming tall fences and gates guarding the houses on the street may seem cold on the outset, but once you pull through into the courtyard, you’re greeted by owners Anu and Daniel, and their house on the left, and straight…

The Ice Hotel, Romania Style

December 28, 2023

Not much time for a lengthly account of our two-night stay at Balea Lake and the Ice Hotel-Romania in the Făgăraș Mountains; instead, I’ve spent the evening studying the Cyrillic alphabet in anticipation for our journey to Bulgaria tomorrow. Please wish us “На добър час” (GOOD LUCK!) as we attempt to navigate our way on the roads with Bulgaria’s strange alphabet and a trusty GPS. As for the last few days, here are some highlights. Below is the inside of our room at the Ice Hotel. We had a wonderful weekend which included one night in the Ice Hotel, dinner in the Ice…

The (Romanian Pigeon Swarm) Christmas Poo

December 25, 2023

Today, Sean and I were blessed by a Christmas Poo. More specifically, a Romanian Pigeon Swarm Christmas Poo. I start this tale with a photo of Sean, taking GoPro videos of the pigeons in the center square of Brasov this morning. We took a taxi downtown to try to attend a Christmas service at the Black Church, but unfortunately we read the Romanian signs wrong (imagine that) and the church isn’t open on Christmas Day. Sorry Jesus. We tried. Immediately after this photo was taken, we started walking home, when all of a sudden, a swarm of pigeons came out…

All I want for Christmas are my two great skis

December 24, 2023

Christmas ski-touring in Romania? With my husband? Life is good… Sean and I had an incredible day of touring today. Yesterday, we got our bearings in the mountains near Sinaia, but a thick layer of clouds kept us from going too far. Today, on the other hand, was a blue bird day—the perfect day for some backcountry touring. All those mountains that had been hidden from us yesterday were our playground this afternoon. And, ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to report that I had my first awesome backcountry decent today. Not a “first decent,” which is what Sean does…

What it takes to be Romanian.

December 22, 2023

For those of you who haven’t been keeping up, Hi! GOOD TO SEE YOU. I’m in Romania with Sean for the next few days, and then we’re off to Bulgaria for a week—all on a Powder Lines ski/ride expedition. We’ve had one full day in this lovely country so far, and I’ve learned some important facts about what it takes to be Romanian. First, you are required to be shameless. When you’re driving along the country’s busiest road and nature calls, you just hop out of the car and pee on the side of the road. In America, we resort…
