So many continents, so little time

Unlike our other adventures around the world, our recent trip to Morocco meant more. That trip marked the end of an era filled with adventure, leading to Sean backcountry snowboarding all seven continents, and me skiing five. The end of that journey marks the beginning of a completely new one for us. (One that we’re excited to tell you more about in the coming months!) To honor that chapter of our lives, I’d like to take a trip down memory lane today—bear with me… 4 years is a long time. I began my journey with Sean in 2010. He, having…

Parrots, beaches, and skylines in a city we can handle — Sydney, Australia

As a couple, Sean and I don’t gravitate toward city life. Case in point: We did a night in NYC after returning from Kyrgyzstan—and while I thought it would be a BRILLIANT idea to show Sean around the city that never sleeps, I forgot about the fact that by the time we arrived, we hadn’t slept in 24 hours. Thus, the lingering culture shock combined with jetlag, having to convince cab drivers to cart our ski bags, plus the noise and stress of the city and trying to find a decent, cheap (but not fast food) place to eat on…

Making the Most of Melbourne

September 10, 2023

Finally had a chance to go through my photos from our day in Melbourne last month. What a unique city to spend a day in… and the rumors are true. Their coffee really is THAT good! I loved all the restaurants and shops that lined these alleyways: The train station: Happiness at the train station: Our new friend, Monique (of Race Across America/Hypo-Active fame) gave us a tour of the city and her adorable daughter Amelie came along for the walk… I couldn’t resist getting a few shots of her and her two stuffed animals. Architecture: Remember the days of velcro shoes?…

Exploring Australia at the Healesville Sanctuary

August 30, 2023

On one of our last days in Victoria, Australia, Sean, Alex and I visited the Healesville Sanctuary. Eucalyptus trees lined all the backroads that led to our destination. Rural Australia is rustic in a completely foreign, completely awesome way. We were so excited when this koala actually got down from his tree and walked around… usually they just sit like a lump in a tree—not this little guy. Kangaroo snack: Sean… learning what it feels like to be a kangaroo on this stationary pogo stick: We loved the bird show! I’ve said before, textures are one of my favorite things—I couldn’t…

To the road less traveled…

Our friend, Michael, opened up a beer tonight and “To the road less traveled” was printed on the inside of the beer cap. It couldn’t have been more meaningful. This week, Sean and I have put some dreams into motion. For a while, we thought we’d never find this obscure road that leads to our dreams, but wouldn’t you know—we found the trail, and we intend to blaze it for many years to come. Basically, after Riding On Insulin received the official news that we were being awarded a capacity building grant from one of the most prestigious Trusts in the nation…

Riding On Insulin—through my eyes

The anticipation was palpable as kids and families trickled into our venue at Mt. Baw Baw last weekend. Coming off a hugely successful camp at New Zealand’s Snow Planet the weekend before, Sean and I were just as excited as the kids. Our first camp in Australia! We’d been working so hard on making that event a reality, and it was finally time to experience it. Riding On Insulin is such an powerful weekend for all who attend, and I want to write about it here because I think so many of you are probably curious about what exactly Sean…

Our Australian experience and coming home to a new dog!

September 2, 2023

Alas, we have finally arrived back in the states. PHEW—and what a trip it was! I apologize for being a little out of the loop lately—if you take unreliable/expensive internet plus a PACKED schedule touring around Australia, you get one Mollie Shambeau who is simply unable-to-blog. That’s our math lesson for today. Before I break the big news—WE GOT ANOTHER DOG!—oh, wow…I guess I couldn’t hold that in. Forget I told you that, and then when I write it again in a few paragraphs, act just as excited as you were now. (This is your cue to stop jumping up…
